Robert Smithson: 5730–Red Clay from Hebron Placed at Mt. Moriah, 1969 for Jewish Museum
In 1969, the Jewish Museum commissioned Robert Smithson to create a graphic for a Jewish new year greeting. In the photograph [5]730 is written in Hebrew letters in red earth on a rocky patch of land. The number 5730 translates from the Jewish calendar to 1969. This specific poster design was never actually sent out—at the last minute Smithson changed his mind on this design and instead designed a poster for the Jewish Museum that features an image of Mirror Trail that was sent out to patrons of the Jewish Museum.
