Robert Smithson: 5730–"Mirror Trail" 1969 for the Jewish Museum
In 1969, the Jewish Museum commissioned Robert Smithson to create a graphic for a Jewish new year greeting. His initial proposal was a photograph of a red clay field at Mount Moriah that had [5]750 written on the ground. The number translates from the Jewish calendar to 1969. However, at the last minute he changed his mind and submitted this photograph instead. The poster features an image of Smithson’s Mirror Trail, a Mirror Displacement work he made outside of Ithaca, New York.
